The Functions and Characteristics of Conscious, Subconscious And Consciousness

My job is to sit around and think.  It’s kind of cool to get paid for thinking.  I think about all kind of things.  As a professional hypnotist and trainer of Hypnotherapy with the National Guild of Hypnotists I think a whole lot about The Mind.  I think about how we even come to exist, and who we are, and I ponder on the experience of the gift of the present moment, and, well, you get the picture.  So, allow me to introduce myself to Natural Awakenings readers with a "Hypnosis 101" on the Triune Mind: Conscious, Subconscious and Consciousness.  Let’s look at each one, independent of the other, yet part of the other.

The creative mind influences the formless universal substance to manifest in alignment with your belief.  --Wayne Dwyer
The Conscious Mind is the analytical mind.  It is the rational mind.  It is that part of our awareness that houses the Critical Factor that screens what enters into the Subconscious Mind.  It deletes and distorts information received, generalizing it at best, and makes judgments often without precision or accuracy.  Our Conscious Mind holds our temporary memory bank that once it receives distorted information, it often becomes totally unreliable.  However it is still the place within our awareness we go to retrieve short-term memory information. You know, like your credit card number, or your bank account pin number or your login password, and yet often forgets what happened years and years ago.  You’d probably be right to think of the Conscious Mind as being enmeshed into the body,  so it can carry out the desires and directions of the Subconscious Mind.

The triune mindNow, the Subconscious Mind is where the real you and me lives.  It is like a 100 trillion neuro-bit storehouse of sensory data that comes with remembered experiences of pictures or images, language and sounds, and feelings or emotions. Everything we’ve ever felt or experienced, the Subconscious remembers. The Subconscious is the director or your feelings and the emotional bio computer that you are.  High priorities of fear and pain are remembered easily in this vault of memories.  In fact, all of your memories and emotions live in the domain of the Subconscious.  Amazingly, the Subconscious can store and organize all these impressions and it does it at the speed of thought!  Imagine 1,000 computers stacked up on top of each other and they still couldn’t equal the magnificent processing power of your Mind.

The Subconscious Mind is programmed to run and preserve the body. Even before you were born, the Subconscious has been programmed to give orders and control and to maintain all of your perceptions This protective value is also used to keep uncomfortable emotions repressed while it cannot process negatives.  Many memories are presented to the rational mind in the effort to create a YOU that is a highly moral and self-actualized being filled with goodness.

"The Thinker of the Thought," as I have learned to call the Subconscious Mind, generates, stores, then distributes energy everywhere in the body.  It responds with instinct and habit, is very, very L-A-Z-Y, hates to change and takes everything literally and personally.  The Subconscious needs lots of repetition to create long-term change and it loves the familiarity of practice and rehearsal.  The Subconscious is also the Picture Consciousness working much like a Pictogram and is symbolic in the way it processes and creates inner hallucinations similar to that found in the dream state.  Thankfully, this level of awareness is always at work, 24/7, yet grounded in the moment, in the present and eternal NOW.  With this all said, your reality is the result of all the experiences you’ve ever had, every thought you’ve ever thought, every lesson you have ever learned.  Everything you know and everything you believe about yourself is a result of your subjective mind.  Your thoughts create your own reality.  Your reality is based on your beliefs, and what you know and believe about yourself is creating your life as you know it, right?

I'll see it when I believe it. --Henry Ford
Finally, Consciousness is your spiritual center.  It is the level of inner awareness that connects you to the collective universal mind.  In Divine Consciousness, you are actually co-mingling with the mind of God…you know no separation, feeling connected to everything; pure consciousness.  Your Divine Consciousness is the hologram of the universal mind, a tiny fragment of the whole, yet the whole…as above, so below, so to speak.  This part of you lives outside of the realm of time as pure potential, influencing all the universal formless substances to come in alignment with all your beliefs.  Your Consciousness is connected to all other minds.  What an awesome power within each and every one of us!
